The ultrasound room gives me flashes of the police station, but the more I try to picture that place clearly, the harder it becomes. I'm hoisted into a gynecologist's chair, my knee pads are removed, and my legs are strapped into the stirrups. The clip my harness to hooks already set in the chair, and my hands are pulled up over my head. The handler scowls at me in disgust before he speaks into an intercom box on the wall so quietly I don't hear what he says, then he's gone and I'm all alone.

When the vet comes in, he does not look pleased. But he doesn't speak to me, instead pulling over what I assume is the ultrasound machine. I've never seen one before, but I know what it's for.

Our little volunteer isn't pregnant and we can't make her open to the public until she is. I know you wanted her available tomorrow, but I don't know how to make that happen at this time."

He paces closer as he speaks, and this time I can hear the response.

"Put her through rapid treatment and give her the serum, then take her to the stocks."

The vet goes pale as he looks at me, but he nods even though I'm the only one who can see him.

"Yes, sir."

He's not at all gentle as he yanks the wand out of me, and he doesn't bother with cleaning anything up. To my surprise, my chair has wheels on it, and the next thing I know I'm being pushed out the door. We draw stares from handlers and a few cows alike as he wheels me through the barn, and I get the impression that this is very unusual. But we don't
